If you’re considering a job on The Hill, you’ve probably wondered just what exactly your duties would entail. Or maybe you’re just curious to learn what people do in the various job positions.

Well luckily for you, Famous DC did the research for you. They took a poll of both current and former staff, and asked them how they typically spend their time at work. Needless to say, they got some pretty interesting answers.

What’s it Like Being a Staff Assistant?

No doubt you’ve heard of Staff Assistants on Capitol Hill. But what is it exactly that they do?

According to the poll, Staff Assistants on The Hill spend a majority of their time handling calls from constituents. Working in this position requires decent listening and communication skills.

You’re also probably familiar with social media monitoring. On Capitol Hill, it’s the Staff Assistant’s job to handle the monitoring of the various social media platforms.

Through social media monitoring, they also play a crucial role in the hiring process. Staff Assistants go through the Facebook profiles of intern applicants to ensure they select the right candidates for any given position.

Some of their time is also spent on more humorous things, such as reserving softball fields for the team.

What’s it Like Being a Press Secretary?

Press Secretaries on The Hill tend to be pretty ambitious. They spend a large amount of their time looking for ways to advance their careers. And many hope to eventually become Communications Directors.

As the name suggests, a Press Secretary is required to handle communications with the public and the media. Among other things, they are often required to write press releases concerning district grants.

Press Secretaries are also typically the ones that arrange for weekly meetings and conferences. They also handle some of the social media monitoring responsibilities on Twitter.

Beyond these two positions, you also have Legislative Correspondents, who take care of correspondence with constituents beyond what a Staff Assistant might do.

What’s it Like Being Chief of Staff?

Finally, you have the Chief of Staff. The Chief of Staff advises their congressperson on topics ranging from legislation to the best attire to wear to a given event. The Chief of Staff also oversees the relationships between staff members by settling disputes.

Each of these positions come with their own interesting tasks. Some tasks may be more serious than others, but not everything is as formal and restricting on Capitol Hill as you might think.
